چکیده

8 Microalgae are currently being investigated as a feedstock for the commercial production of 9 transportation fuels, due to their potential scalability and sustainability advantages over conventional 10 feedstocks. The water consumption of microalgae has been postulated to be a resource barrier for 11 large-scale production. This study presents an assessment of the water footprint (WF) of a closed 12 photobioreactor-based biofuel production system, where microalgae cultivation is simulated with 13 geographical and temporal resolution. The assessment focuses on the WF as modeled for four 14 different fuel conversion pathways, and in 10 continental US locations corresponding to high 15 productivity yields. The WF is comprehensively assessed using a hybrid approach which combines 16 process and economic input-output lifecycle analysis method, using three metrics: blue, green and 17 lifecycle WF. Results show that the blue WF of microalgae biofuels varies between 23 and 85 18 m 3 ·GJ -1 depending on process and geographic location. The green WF shows that microalgae 19 cultivation may reduce the required local water withdrawals. Water credits from the co-products vary 20 with allocation methods and end uses, from credits of less than 4 m 3 ·GJ -1 up to credits of 334 m 3 ·GJ 21 1 . Results for the net lifecycle WF with coproduct credits varies between 80 and -291 m 3 ·GJ -1 . 22 Discussion focuses on the sensitivity of microalgae biofuels WF and highlights potential local and 23 national strain of water resources relative to other fuels and biofuels. 24

Effects of salinity on growth and fatty acid composition of green microalgae Dunaliella bardawil as a candidate source for biofuel production

Microalgae as a source of saturated and unsaturated fatty acids, pigments, pharmaceutical and food metabolites, has received more focus by biological researchers at last decades. The amount and composition of fatty acids produced by microalgae depended on biomass production and environmental factors such as changes in salinity, light and nutrient availability. In this study, the green microalga...

The water footprint of biofuels from microalgae

Microalgae are receiving much interest as a possible biofuels feedstock, resulting in increasing research and development efforts. Biofuels from microalgae are potentially important sources of liquid renewable energy carriers, replacing petrol. Algae are not produced on a large-scale yet, but research shows promising results. Biofuel production needs water, an increasingly scarce resource. The ...

The water footprint of biofuel produced from forest wood residue via a mixed alcohol gasification process

Forest residue has been proposed as a feasible candidate for cellulosic biofuels. However, the number of studies assessing its water use remains limited. This work aims to analyze the impacts of forest-based biofuel on water resources and quality by using a water footprint approach. A method established here is tailored to the production system, which includes softwood, hardwood, and short-rota...

Net energy and greenhouse gas emission evaluation of biodiesel derived from microalgae.

Biofuels derived from microalgae have the potential to replace petroleum fuel and first-generation biofuel, but the efficacy with which sustainability goals can be achieved is dependent on the lifecycle impacts of the microalgae-to-biofuel process. This study proposes a detailed, industrial-scale engineering model for the species Nannochloropsis using a photobioreactor architecture. This proces...
